I hate to break it to you, but not all proper sex toys which are designed for masturbation are safe either. I know – after me going on about everything you shouldn’t use, you’d have hoped that the things literally designed to be used for masturbation would be safe. But no! The sex gods and goddesses have failed us again.

Lots of sex toys are great and can be a fun addition to your sex life. They can be a safe way to explore new sensations and try something new. But you have to be careful about what you’re buying.

I know it’s tempting to buy something cheap, especially when you feel a bit embarrassed about looking up sex toys. But the problem with buying cheap toys is that they’re often made of rubbish materials which are pretty bad for your body. Lots of cheap toys are made of rubber or jelly (not the kind you have with ice cream at birthday parties), and these materials are porous. That means they hold on to the bacteria and other nasties that need to be cleaned off after using the toy, so you can never get them properly clean.

Other badly made toys may break easily, have toxic coatings that might flake off while you’re using them, or might get lost inside you. Always make sure you’re buying from a reputable brand and make sure that a toy is labelled ‘body-safe’ before using it for sex or masturbation.
